Have you backed up your life?

Updated: Apr 19, 2021

Today I want to talk about backing up your life – and your mind – just like you’d back up your computer or your photos in the cloud.

Basically, this is all about making sure that your most important memories, lessons learnt, achievements, and so on get ‘backed up’ somewhere, so even if something happens to you (or your memory), those things will be safe. They won’t just vanish once you’re gone (a scary thought).

But how on earth do you go about doing something like this? Well, fortunately, there are several options:

• Write a book (or get someone else to write a book from the information you give them). This could be an autobiography, a memoir, or a novel – a fictionalised version of your life. (You can check out my book Write Your Life: The Ultimate Life Hack For Achieving Your Dreams, for more info on how to start this).

• Start a blog, writing regular articles on things you’ve done in the past and the lessons you’ve learnt from them.

• Start a YouTube channel, making videos instead of writing articles. Record your life in a fun way.

• Start a Facebook page or an Instagram profile, where you can share your life lessons and memories.

• Keep a diary/journal, with the aim of passing it down to the next generation of your family (or anyone else you know) once it’s full, at which point you can start another one.

• Tell other people your stories – have face-to-face conversations with friends or family members or write them out in letters/emails. Encourage them to tell their friends and family members too, both now and in the future, to make sure your stories get passed down over the years to come.

• Keep a box full of ‘life souvenirs’, which you can pass down to family/friends. Personally, I have a huge chest full of travelling souvenirs, postcards, tourist brochures, gig tickets, theatre programmes, photos, and anything else I’ve kept from my travels, holidays, and days out. If anyone found that chest, they’d instantly be able to understand a lot about me and my life.

Many of us worry about forgetting things from our youth as we get older, of memories slipping past us as we age, and then there’s the terrifying thought of everything in our brain – our thoughts, our memories, our achievements – completely vanishing once we’ve left this earth. A horrible notion.

Well, if you back up your life and your mind, you can rest easy, safe in the knowledge that you’ve passed on all the important bits from your time on this planet. Pretty neat, right?

So, have you backed up your life?

The above exercise is taken from my new book, Write Your Year: 365 Ways To Change Your Year And Your Life. With an awesome new prompt for every single day of the year – all designed to help you improve your life, revamp your mindset, and have a whole lot of fun – this book is the ideal accompaniment to Write Your Life: The Ultimate Life Hack For Achieving Your Dreams.
